Today’s discovery – Musicovery – Play your mood

    • Device : Iphone – web
    • Price : $10.99 / 3 months
    • Country : France
    • Data-base : streamed
    • Link : http://musicovery.com/

Musicovery is a customised webradio service. It’s like Pandora/Last.Fm. The user interface may seem strange at first but just click wherever you want on the moodmap to generate a new webradio. Initial choices are based on the type of music you want to listen to (rap, jazz, funk, rock, …) and when it was recorded (1950 to 2007).

Founders had included a graphic discovery engine that they also created – Liveplasma Technology – which lets users navigate on a musical map depending on their tastes.
Web service is more interesting than the Iphone app where all those features are not available.

+  Filtering by genre, date and mood
++  Create your musical mindmap and share it as a widget on a social network or a website
-  Interface is not intuitive, it takes a while to understand how the service works
–  The Iphone app only works with the user’s music database

Thanks to Musicovery I discover Quantic with the song Un canto a mi terra

Today’s Discovery – Last.fm Discover : 2 million tracks from emerging artists

  • Device : web
  • Country : USA
  • Link : http://www.last.fm/discover#
  • Data Base : Owned
  • Price : Free (with your Last.Fm registration)

The discovery of online music is always limited to groups who sell more albums, which are the most used and therefore most referenced on the web. As a result, we always find the same artists who monopolize the cyber scene. Difficult in this context to still be surprised by searching online.
Only few site which highlight groups from a little known or emerging indie scene exist, so it’s worth noting the initiative of last.Fm with his discovery engine Last.FM Discover.
You will not be inundated by the headliners since have simply been removed to make room for those who often find it difficult to make themselves known. Under these conditions, it is easier to start to discover hidden talents.

You will find headings as strange that :

Blacker than the blackest black times infinity

Fuckin Awesome

Renato Ventura saids bravo

… and much more

Try out this musical field dedicated to indie bands !

Today’s Discovery – Songza – Right music at the right time

  • Device : Iphone – Android – web
  • Price : Free
  • Country : USA
  • Data-base : N/A
  • Link : www.songza.com

Songza is a free music streaming service for web and mobile. Depending on the period of the week, your mood, activitiy, culture,… it lets you browse thousands of playlists, create your own playlists collection, search for playlists by song or artist.
Just like in an hotel, you can ask for the Concierge service to find music, singing under the shower on monday morning, livening your saturday night party,… Songza will find `right music at the right time` but not necessarly the ones you enjoy ! Indeed, the system lacks a recommenation system taking into account the user’s taste.

+ Everything is free and no premium version.
++ Concierge System is fun and useful, depending on the time of the day, you can really find matched musics.
- As Last Fm services, users can’t select a track or an artist but only a playlist. Ad banner on each screen.
- – Songza is not really a music discover application, user can’t give his tastes and influence results. It’s only a playlist player.

Thanks to Songza I discover Harry Belafonte with the song Jump in the line

Today’s discovery : DISCOVR

  • Device : Iphone – Ipad – web
  • Price : $2.99 – $4.99
  • Country : Australia
  • Data-base : Echonest
  • Link : http://discovr.info/

Discovr developed a discovery application for various content : music, movies, applications, people. After entering a search, results appear as round icons scattered on a plan.
In the Music version, clicking on an icon reveals six new artists belonging to the same musical universe as the original selection. For each of these icons, several actions are possible, listen to 30 second extracts of the most popular tracks, obtain bio, share on social networks or new broaden the search by clicking again on an icon.

Be careful not to open too many icons at once, after a few minutes of use, the map of results can become somewhat complex and the user would tend to get lost in his research.

+  Showing results clear and legible connections between artists.
++  Rdio account holders can extend their research and listening on Rdio Application
-  No way for the user to indicate the suitability of links between artists.
–  No recommendation tool integrated. User discovery experience is thus limited to results elected by the application.

Thanks to Discovr I discovered The Magic Sam’s Boogie

Today’s discovery : Ghostly Discovery

Device : Iphone – web
Price :
Free
Country :
USA
Data-base :
Ghostly International
Link :
http://ghostly.com/discovery

The Californian indie music label, Ghostly International, has released a new musical app suitably named Ghostly Discovery. This app associates a colour to your current mood and offers you a range of Ghostly’s electronic artists and songs to match your feelings. These matches also allow you a quick preview of their sound, the choice to buy the music, and even a bio of the group.

Ghostly Discovery
Yes, it offers only electronic music available on the Ghostly International label, but we still give it kudos as an interesting app matching our moods with some electronic beats.

+ Color system associated with user’s mood is really fun.
++ Initiative taken directly from an independent music producer to promote their catalog. It`s rare we see this.
- It’s possible to indicate favorites, but you can’t access them later.
– Application is a promotional tool for Ghostly International and therefore offers only label artists.

Thanks to Ghostly Discovery, I discovered Lusine with the tracks Two Dots
