It’s the 80′s, cramped in the back seat of my parents’ car, I hear an awesome song on the radio. Lost in the moment and being eight years old, I didn’t pay attention to the title or the singer, but the melody has stuck with me for years. Once in awhile, the memories of the song would come back to haunt me.
As a adult, I was on a mission. I looked a little silly humming that song to anyone old enough to maybe have heard it. Of course no one recognized it, until one day, a friend installed Midomi on her iPhone which put an end to years of fruitless Youtube searching! Richard Marx, I’ve been looking for you for so long! Chances are, this probably has happened to you too.
The team at Melodis have created Midomi a free iPhone app that enables you to identify an artist, song, lyrics and even Youtube videos related to your musical search. The app is easy to use, you just have to press on the SoundHound button. If the song is playing, try to minimise background noise and SoundHound takes 10 seconds or less to identify the song playing. If you’re like me and only have your memory as a reference, you’ll be suprised how quickly SoundHound finds your song based on your humming. Don’t be scared, you don’t have to be a skillful singer, trust me…
With an option called SaySearch, you can say the name of the title or artist and it will be displayed instantly. There’s also TypeSearch that does the same thing, but you type it down instead of saying it. What is great with Midomi is that you can bookmark the song you found and share it with your friends via social networking. It also gives you the possibility to buy the song on iTunes.
Unlike Shazam, which doesn’t recognize your awful singing, Midomi is great in that it understands what you’re trying to hum. Midomi is a free app for the iPhone, and it’s a great way to figure out who made that mysterious song you like.
